A Bridge Too Waaaaagh

Bleeuuurrgh... I feel like I've been infected by Nurgle himself (ok, it's probably just a cold but still)! However, every diseased cloud has a (mithril) silver lining and a day off work sick has allowed me some much needed time to start watching The Wire again... oh yeah, and finish off my first major piece of scenery!
A Bridge

If you've read my first post you'll know that until recently I was a scenery virgin; a naive toolless innocent in a depraved world of milliput and plasticard! In fact I have tried making scenery when I was about 10 years old and am a little relieved that these efforts failed to survive. I decided recently (inspired by the awesome pieces of terrain Praetor has been putting together for our games) to have a more serious attempt at making some scenery and consulted the oracle for advice. There are so many good articles on making scenery out there that listing them could be a post all of it's own but the one which spurred me to action was this one; simple terrain made using the tops from fizzy drink bottles.

So on to the main topic of the post... the bridge (inspired by this one). I'm not going to say too much on the construction of the bridge as it's been covered by the linked article. The only way mine differs is that I've attempted to make it modular so that the middle section can be swapped or extended (more future projects). I also wanted to keep it as generic as possible so it could be used for 40K or Fantasy Battle.

The Completed Bridge
... And in sections

The wood has been stained using several layers of citadel washes, starting with sepia, then adding darker layers (chestnut, agrax, brown) to the cracks and joins. I wanted the bridge to have a "used" look so I wasn't to careful to keep to the gaps, smudging any extra wash to soften the edges. Finally I added another layer of sepia wash to pull it all together.

The base is covered in a mixture of standard flock and gravel, with the addition of cork bits (with added wash) for rocks, some Hornby Field Grass and a small amount of "incorrectly" applied static grass.

The base also gave me a chance to give the new Agrellan Earth paint (from GW) which I've been dying to try since I first saw it. I'm impressed with how easy it is to use. Just paint on, and wait for it to dry. If applied thickly it ends up looking like dried mud; applied thinly it kinda looks like hear damaged paint. I've used it sparingly around the bases of each bridge supports as well as one the bridge itself for the "travelled over" look.

Which about wraps things up. There are a few things I'd do differently (use thicker plasticard for the base) and some things I really need to learn how to do properly (static grass) but overall i'm happy with it.

A Bridge To(o) Waaaaaaagh!

  1. Wow CBC! This looks awesome! I also love the worn lines where vehicles would have driven over it! Can't wait to see it for real in some games. Do you have any plans to add more sections?

  2. Thanks Gotrek. I've had some ideas for extrasections... which led to ideas for a whole walkway... which led to me thinking about making a swamp based gameboard. so... yes probably :D
